I’m getting ready to take a few weeks off to travel to the Pacific Northwest with the kids and grandkids. I feel incredibly blessed to be able to take this time, though of course, traveling comes with its own unique set of joys and challenges.
As I prepare, many of you have asked: What do you take with you in your herbal travel kit?
So I thought I’d share. Keep in mind, as the designated “family herbalist,” I pack not only for myself but to cover the common issues that might arise for anyone in the family - adults, kids, and old folks alike. Here’s what’s in my “kit” this time around:
Cold, Flu, and Immunity
Great Throat Spray: I use this before and during flights to help prevent me from being exposed to something I don't want in my system. Also great to use at the very first sign of a scratchy throat or cold.
Xlear Sinus Spray: A must in airports, planes, and crowded indoor spaces. Keeps sinuses clear and moisturized while providing an extra layer of protection.
Great Green Leaf Formula: I love this one! I use it at the earliest sign of any outside invaders that could get past my defenses, and also use it preventatively when I’m exposed to crowds. It's my immune support powerhouse. (Prescription needed)
Digestive Support/Motion Sickness/Heat Stroke
Curing Pills (Kang Ning Wan): My number one go-to for supporting digestive balance and comfort during travel, especially helpful when adjusting to new foods or elevations. A true travel classic. (Prescription needed)
Early Comfort (Huo Xiang Zheng Qi Pian): My top pick for meeting the challenges of "not so fresh" food, that may have caused a major imbalance. Also supportive during hot weather or long, exhausting travel days.. (Prescription needed)...
Pain, Overexertion, and Muscle Recovery
Soma Ease: My formula for pain and overdoing it! Perfect for all the extra exertion and minor bump and bruises, and of course, any discomfort. Travel tip: I always take Soma Ease before boarding a flight to help prevent stiffness and aches from cramped plane seats.
Myomend (Proteolytic Enzymes): Excellent for keeping muscles and joints happy, especially with all the extra walking, hiking, and keeping up with the kids and grandkids that happens on vacation.
Sleep and Recovery
Happiness Bark Sleep Elixir: My go-to natural sleep support while traveling. Helpful for adjusting to new time zones and winding down at night in unfamiliar beds.
Energy and Endurance
Cordyceps: This super herb gives me the extra get-up-and-go I need on active days. I take it in the morning and early afternoon for a clean energy boost and immune support.
Urinary Health
Cranberry + D-Mannose Capsules (Orion Herbs): UTIs are more common while traveling, especially for women. This is great to take preventively if you’re prone to support a healthy urinary tract system.
Ba Zheng San (UTI Powder): I keep this on hand to use at the very first signs of a UTI. It can make a big difference if you catch things early. (prescription needed)
Customized Support
Personalized Travel Formula: I take a travel-modified version of my regular formula, something modified to support my system during the added stress and excitement of travel. Your herbalist or acupuncturist can help tailor one for you. (prescripiton needed)
